Sustainable Kickoff: Bremen’s First Dishwashing Mobile for Reusable Tableware Is Inaugurated

The use of reusable tableware at cultural events in Bremen is to be promoted. Cleaning it will now be easier thanks to a dishwashing system suitable for events: The dishwashing mobile cleans reusable tableware at city festivals, local festivals, or concerts on a large scale.

A historic moment in the history of reusables: Bremen’s Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte and Environment Senator Katrin Moosdorf inaugurated a new dishwashing mobile for events in the Bremen city center at Domshof.

The dishwashing mobile is a transportable dishwashing line on a trailer. The mobile dishwasher can be transported to various locations and is equipped with a powerful industrial dishwasher. The only requirements at the location are a three-phase power connection and a water supply. Various washing programs ranging from one to ten minutes allow up to 60 baskets to be washed in a record time of one hour. This way, plates, cups, and other reusable containers for up to 15,000 guests per day can be cleaned.

A Low-Barrier and Solidarity-Based Concept

A central dishwashing mobile for rental has the advantage that not every organizer needs to purchase one, which would be uneconomical. Starting in September, cultural organizers can rent the dishwashing mobile at an affordable price—tableware included. The Bremen association Musikszene approached the Bremen-based company Greenbox, that distributes various reusable containers. These containers are made of bioplastic and come in various shapes to accommodate different types of food. Flea markets, theater performances, company parties, or open house days: Companies, schools, associations, or social institutions can rent the mobile for a variable cost contribution. “For the latter, the fee is minimal,” says Manuel Jänig from Musikszene Bremen e.V, who is responsible for the organization and coordination of the rental.

“This dishwashing trailer is intended to support event organizers in implementing a reusable concept,” says Bovenschulte. Reusable solutions are increasingly being used at events in Bremen, such as at the last Breminale—so far, however, without an on-site washing option, which involves significant organizational effort. Previously, dirty dishes had to be transported by truck to the cleaning service provider in Hannover and back. The availability of reusable solutions is increasingly becoming a legal requirement in Germany. However, reusable systems can only function if the necessary infrastructure is adequately developed.

Less Waste and More Efficient Use of Tableware On-Site

Thanks to financial support from the Senator for Culture and the Senator for Environment, Climate, and Science, the association of artists and cultural workers was able to purchase the dishwashing mobile. This is intended to encourage organizers to use reusable tableware at public events with food and drink service. This serves environmental protection: It not only reduces waste production, but also allows the locally cleaned tableware to immediately re-enter the usage cycle. An attractive solution for organizing events in a cost-effective and sustainable way by integrating reusable concepts.
